![]() The Reaper occupies a sort of curious position in the hierarchy once you've gotten a little equipment together: it's fairly arguably the single scariest creature in the game(the howl/roar thing just isn't fair the writhing muscle and circling behavior are way the (appropriately enough) somewhat etherial ghost leviathan attacks and it's fast enough and motivated enough(unlike, say, sandsharks and stalkers which are pretty lazy about pursuit) that if it's close enough to see and feeling hungry you in considerable peril of ending up in those awful grasper appendages and about to get instant killed(or, if you have a seamoth, shaken like a ragdoll while you stare into its empty, hungry, eyes until your vessel disintegrates) but it is also among the most technologically manageable: (That memory will stick around for a while, although come to think of it, I've been gacked by Crashers more often than by the leviathans.) Having a Reaper eat your Seamoth and then chase you down as a followup snack gives one a crystal clear understanding of who is on top of the food chain. The deep crooning of the Reefbacks becomes a friendly background, and even the initially frightening assaults of a Stalker or Sand Shark get classified as "mostly harmless" compared with the barking chatter of the Crabsquids or the (hopefully distant) roar of a Reaper. Likewise, the audio is every bit as good as the visuals, if not better. ![]() But I'd like them to work on distant object / popping up like the mountain island and the mushroom forest biome in particular, and the stutter seen when entering or leaving a vehicle or the water. I recall being awed both by an eclipse as the big moon crossed in front of the sun, and the first nightfall when the ocean became lit by luminescent critters. ![]() And it doesn't insist that you see everything- although you will need to visit the majority of underwater wrecks to pick up all of the various blueprints if you want to "finish" the game. Subnautica does a fine job of letting you experience the story at your own pace.
